2012 London Olympics - Customised Stuntsticks

Earlier this month, of recruited myself, , and , all from a skateboarding background to work on an ambitious brief he was to project manage on behalf of Egg Strategy based in Boulder, Colorado. US. The concept was to create 23 customized skateboards between us in a day and a night for the '2012 London Olympics / Coca-Cola Activation Board'. We had free reign, the only stipulation being that each board carried the 2012 logo, and some form of Coke branding. We all received three answers in advance from each executive to help us incorporate elements of their personality into the designs. The above two boards cover - cyling, panthers and the colour yellow for the first exec, and airplanes and the colour blue for the second.

Illustration to accompany an article for - titled 'Linguistic Limbo - it's not what you say. well, yes it is.' by Frank Murtaugh. Sidewalk Skateboarding Mag

A few months back on a day trip to Barcelona with the sterling happy snapper Leo from Sidewalk , we got chatting and he reckoned I should shoot a sequence of a new trick I'd just learnt as he was unaware of it being done before. I decided to take Master Sharpiro up on his offer, dusted off the old stunt stick, painted a simple small mural at the skate park in Birmingham where the stunt would be performed (due to the unpredictable English weather which is predictably wet). After a fair few tries, 22 if memory serves me correctly the above trick was captured. I decided to lay out my own spread, unfortunately the wood background looked lighter on screen, after it had been printed I learnt a valuable lesson! Nothings as it seems. Thanks to Leo, Ben & Horsely for being BOSS!

    Animals for Anorak Magazine

Here are some spots I just finished for the Autumn issue of Anorak 'The Happy Mag for Kids" . The final piece is actually a double page spread consisting of 10 wild lifers in total, I was asked by Rob aka the Art Director aka Supermundane to make them slightly quirky in colour and composition so the yoots found it a little less obvious to guess what they are. Well I did my best but you cannot pull the wool over children's eyes! I'll put the finished product up when it's locked down and ready for airing. X

    Kruger Magazine - Death Vessel

Everytown has it's own storyteller to pass down it's history and keep local legends alive whether it's a singer or an old drunk. In Krugerville this duty falls to Joel Thibodeau from Death Vessel, a sagelike storyteller, full of wisdom and experience who captivates his crowds with his songs. The kind of guy people travel from miles around to hear, like a prophet but with an extremely high pitched voice, he's bit of an oddball really! The above illustration will feature in the forthcoming issue of Kruger Magazine.

Some of my outpourings are now encased within the RISE section of the Dazed Digital website, amongst a host of talented image makers and there unique visual delights. Many thanks go to D&C's Art Director Peter Stitson for deciding that my work was strong enough to make the cut and Francisco Salvado for putting it up there!

    Carhartt adverts

These are some potential ad designs I entered for a competition that Carhartt held in conjunction with The Illustrated Ape Magazine...It's really a cunning way for Carhartt to get fresh advertising for nowt...the swines!

The above illustrations are for an article on Eco-Tourism and will run in issue 15 of the beautiful independent magazine 'Stranger' based in Falmouth, Cornwall. I had fun doing these! visit the link on the header to find a stockist near you.

Plan B Magazine - The Tuss

This is for an album review on THE TUSS (Aphex Twin) that I recently bodged together for the July issue of Plan B magazine. I was super busy, the deadline loomed like the artificial stench from a haze plug in, so I had very little time to think of something more fitting...I'm ashamed of my effort!

    Cow PR

I recently did some posters for the Cow Pr agency in London to brighten up their office. After some deliberation they decided on the top image.

The Outcrowd were recently interviewed and photographed for issue 6 of Ten4 magazine and asked about the perks and pitfalls of running a creative collective. Above is a photo taken for the article wearing some masks I made. You can view our thoughts in magazine format or online http://www.channel4.com/4talent/ten4/collectives.htm , we're in good company.

    SMILE!

Folk don't seem willing to smile these days and it costs nothing. This image continues my usage of the non-colour black, some might say i'm latching on to my Goth years.

    Ink This 1 & 2 exhibition photos

Above is the Shin Tanaka paper sculpture I customized for the Coningsby Gallery Show and The Outcrowds collaboratorial piece which Log Roper, Tsz Wan, Mr Ben, Self Ctrl and Myself created whilst holding hands. It's off to Hong kong next for the third and final installment of this particular show.

A bit backwards putting this up after the second show stuff but here is the mural my fellow Outcrowders and I collaborated on for the first "Ink This" show held at the Vanilla Art Gallery in Leicester back in 2006.

    "INK THIS 2" exhibition

So... The Outcrowd Collective were invited back to exhibit at the second 'Ink This' group show in Leceister. Brett & Gurps the curators asked if i'd decorate one section of the panoramic window for them and the above photos document what I did. I've chronologically arranged them so you can see the despair on my face at the prospect of filling a large piece of glass on my todd in absolutely baltic conditions; right the way through to reflecting on the finished piece over a non-alcoholic beer? The exhibition will be touring next month to London and The Coningsby Gallery, after that it's off to Hong Kong with a possible book in the pipeline published by Idn.
Much love goes out to the very talented Chris Keenan aka Prime Objective for snapping these shots. Visit his beautiful website and treat yourself to some lomo wizardry and a tidy pin badge. http://www.primeobjective.co.uk/

    Suburban Bliss 'Moondog' T

Toby sent me (with a little assistance from Marcus Oakley, thanks Marcus) the finished Moondog t-shirt I drew a little while ago for Suburban Bliss. I'm really pleased with how it's come out, with all the detail very much intact. Above are some pages from the new brochure and a close up of Moondogs head so you can get an idea of the detail for yourselves. Now click on the top heading link and go treat yourself to one please!

Here's an illustration of Bukowski I did for last seasons range of Suburban Bliss t's, it was well received by all accounts.

    Creative Review

There's a review of Anorak Magazine on the 'First Sight' section inside the April issue of Creative Review. The theme for this issue is the environment and how important our role as designers is in helping to promote the reduction of our collective carbon footprint. They have used two of my spreads from the Obu Story I illustrated too...and I get a mention underlined in red...Radical!

    A brighter shade of green

This is a portrait of me and the fairmaiden. Just getting a brief sniff of the country last thursday was enough to turn my skin green with delight (although the image does maybe portray an unhappy, somewhat ill looking mugg). I can assure you this is my over the moon face you see before you.

    Friday, March 02, 2007

    Leave this all behind...

The fairmaiden has just found out she's got herself a job, teaching little people in Exeter. Term starts this September, so off we trottle down South to the country. I'm fully stoked, but also pretty apprehensive about the move, I don't yet know how i'm going to survive there? any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

    Let's Tap our troubles away!

Thankyou to Rob Ryan for encouraging me out of my hibernation period somewhat prematurely.

    Most days leave me somewhat...

    I'm getting older

I turned 28 last month and i'm thoroughly looking forward to hereditary baldness by the time I reach 30. I'm hoping some long overdue hair will finally spread across my chops before then, just to balance things out abit.

    I will lay...

    For a short while...

    Drawing is...

Without it, I would have most certainly disappeared into the ether a long time ago.

    Stressed...

I have a tendancy to leave important things to the very last possible minute, which causes irregular heart palpitations, unnervingly frequent trips to the lavatory and occasionally I'll go the full hog and happy slap myself into unconsciousness.

    Leonard Cohen

    One word... Suzanne.

    Folk Music

I like to listen to Folky music when i'm drawing. Herman Dune gets alot of air play as does Joni Mitchell and Donovan.

    Anorak Magazine

Above are 3 of 8 spreads I did for the next issue of Anorak magazine. The short story's about Obu the Ostrich who's really unhappy because he wants to enter the Bondoogo Bush Animal Olympics but he can't fly like all the other birds. Obu eventually discovers that he doesn't have to be like the rest of the birds, if he just realises what he can do then everything will be fine and dandy. The Guardian recently reviewed Anorak on their blog as did Creative match, I was more than chuffed to get a mention. If you're curious to hear what they had to say on this inventive and sincere publication then by all means visit the following links below. Much love goes out to Supermundane & Cathy Olmedillas for hooking me up with this one to illustrate!!!

    Co7 t-shirt design

Here's one of the designs I recently completed for a new t-shirt company called Co7 titled 'Let the Hope kite sail'. I was put in touch with the two guys running the project by Miss Lucy Mclaughlan from Beat13 who went to university with one of them. Lucy was too busy to do a design so instead kindly recommended that they have a look at The Outcrowd Collective website, which they did and contacted me after my work struck a chord with one of the chaps, thankyou Master Davies.

    Mother Agency

Here we have a grinning pussy and some faces I drew for the Mother agency in New York. The cat's been chosen to feature on the Flip networking sites advertising campaign .

    Bill Hicks for Modart Magazine

A very clever & funny man indeed. This illustration was for a tribute article on Mr Hicks for Modart Magazine in Austria.

    Bright & Beautiful Vortex

    Yes it is!

    The Birds!!!!!

This is what will happen if we don't start looking after our environment properly, I hope I never have to wake up one day and see this image in my back garden!

    No style

This little fellow thinks he has no style, I beg to differ! just look at his striking pink jacket with orange detailing. Lovely. Chin up fella, there are no flies on you.

    Splash page

This is the new 2007 splash page for my website http://www.citydreamer.co.uk/ . Shameless self promotion.

    Simple Things!

Yes, it's the simple things that matter to me most, like a nice stroll in the woods with my better half, or a roll on the stunt stick to the shops and back to pick up a sunday paper.

    The Kinks

One of my favourite British bands of all time. Ray Davies is a genius. When I contemplate the veritable array of whimsical earjoy this fellow has written it blows my head right off my neck, Autumn Almanac, you really got me, dedicated follower of fashion, see my friends and death of a clown being some of his most magical.

    Gone Fishing!

This chaps off fishing! I used to enjoy the occasional fishing trip, i've caught a few perch in my time. It's all about stealth you don't need a rod, just tip toe up to the waters edge, wearing the above headgear, slip yourself gently into the river, submerge, and keep your arms & hands wide open! Fish love a hug.

    Socially Retarded.

I can be a right muppet sometimes if i'm totally surrounded by people i've never met before!

    Plan B Magazine

Illustration for Plan B Mag to accompany an album review of The Mass' latest offering.

    New Year?

So New Years been and gone, I managed to stear clear of my usual two beer narcolepsy and stayed awake to see 2007 in with my friends. I'd been quaffing the rouge veno for most of the evening like a prize tit, and around 3am started to feel somewhat giddy and vacant, so I promptly removed myself from public view and made myself a little better with the aid of my hand......pleasant?

    The Velvet Underground

To me this band conjures up images of paisley, pinks and magentas. But for some reason I used none of these for this picture? and where's the lovely Nico you ask.... Sorry.

    Hope...

Is all we can do sometimes!

    The Illustrated Ape Magazine

I illustrated the Offspring Section titled 'Fabled Conceptions of Celebrity Freaks' for the current issue of The Illustrated Ape magazine. The overall theme for this issue was 'Heroes'.

    Kindness

It's important to have heart, kindness really does matter!

    Be Brave!!!

Some words of wisdom I regularly utter to myself.

    James Taylor

Cast your eyes upon those braces!

    Plan B Magazine

This illustration was used way back in the June/July issue of Plan B for an album review on Quasis' latest offering 'when the going gets dark'. I thought it was very apt for this time of year.

    Talking Heads

I'm a really big fan of Talking Heads. My favourite album is probably Speaking in Tongues, no 77, actually it's More Songs About Buildings and Food, no wait it's Remain in Light, as a matter of fact it's Little Creatures. I guess they're all pretty shit hot!

    Birds

This is a Christmas present for a lady who likes birds. Here we have a Robin and a House Sparrow. They were each going to have speech bubbles with passing pleasantries noted inside. But I opted to leave these out because they crowded the composition. Anyway it's off to be framed on Friday. Hope she likes it.

    Winters Definately Here!!!

It's super chilly outside right now, so I hope you're wrapping up warm when venturing outdoors. I tend to get a little depressed this time of year. I find I draw more at night when it's quieter and dark, my illustrations therefor have a chillier feel about them.

    If You Could.......

My submission for the annual publication 'If you could do anything tomorrow what would it be?' set up by designers Will Hudson and Alex Bec. I'm always trying to make sense of the unsenseable, so tomorrow if I had the option I'd like to stop doing this!

    US Teen Vogue

I was commissioned to design 75 icons, emoticons, headings and various other illustrations for US Teen Vogues new networking site 'Flip'. This one is about those dreaded bad hair days.

    Fashion Crisis

Another one for Vogue, this was inspired by individuality and how some people are considered fashion crisis' by certain groups of people and hailed as trend setters by others. The girl above is my kind of trend setter, rocking bold colours, a maternity dress and some bucklefast plimsoles.

    Purse

This is one of three girls accessory icons I designed for Vogue. Here we have a talking purse.

    Clutchbag

The second being this suspicious looking clutchbag......................

    Holdall

    and finally a befuddled holdall.

    Supersonic Festival

I designed this poster to coincide with the annual Supersonic festival held at the Custard Factory in Birmingham. Capsule the event organisers asked 8 illustrators to interprate the words emergence/undergrowth/eco-system. Limited to a three colour palette consisting of Grey, Black and Pink, this was my effort.

    Creative Alliance Poster

I designed this poster to advertise Creative Alliances 'After Hours' program, it will have some information on it before it's whisked off to the printers.

    H&M

I illustrated this for H&M, it was used as an advertorial exclusively for a new childrens magazine called Anorak. A sticker sheet consisting of clothes from their Autumn kids range accompanied my spread. The idea being, the child/children could have fun dressing the woodland creatures in various Scandinavian based garmentry.

    Suburban Bliss

This here's a rejected design for the t-shirt company Surburban Bliss, mainly due to the awkward composition. So I've recently tweaked the image, removed the floor, and framed the characters. Fingers crossed the revised version gets the go ahead next year.

    Moondog

This is an illustration of Louis T. Hardin more widely known as Moondog, a revered pioneer on the Avant-Garde/Minimalist scene in New York. Moondog became blind after an accident with a dynamite cap at the age of 17 and wrote all his music in braille. He Studied Music at the Iowa School for the Blind and later at Memphis. Moondog moved to New York in 1943 with no contacts and only one months rent with the intention of getting closer to the 20th C classical scene. For the next 30 years he became something of a cultural enigma. Positioning himself on 54th Street and Avenue, later known as Moondog corner, he would entertain crowds playing his compositions on home made drums and some portable keyboards, whilst reciting his own poetry. His eccentricity was furthered by the sporting of a long beard and a spear. He also wore home made clothes consisting of a robe, a Vikings helmet and leather patchwork trousers. His influence can be seen today in bands like Sterolab, and much of his work has been sampled by contemporary musicians around the globe. This illustration has been selected for the 2007 Suburban Bliss t-shirt range.

    Bicycle riding

My friend Marcus inspired me to start riding a bicycle again. You can get to places very quickly and it costs nothing but a little human energy. It's a convenient mode of transport which helps to keep you fit too. Thankyou Marcus.

    Chit Chat

I often overhear people in the street muttering various things, here's a few of those mutterings.

    Friendship

Surrounding yourself with good friends is important. I feel very blessed to have such a lovely bunch of friends surrounding me. They make me laugh, cry and question my sanity.

    Guffer for Semi Permanent

I think the majority of elderly people are pretty cool. They mooch and dodder about at their own leisure, have interesting stories to tell, drive whilst just about peering over the steering wheel of their automobiles, most are refreshingly polite to. So this is my homage to the good old folk out there getting things done! This image has been selected for inclusion in the annual Sydney based Semi-Permanent book 07.

    Happy Days

We all like to have at least a few of these a week.....right!

    Plan B Magazine

This here is an illustration of electronic music wizard Thomas Dolby for an album review column in Plan B magazine. He's most revered for his breakthrough track 'She blinded me with science' released in the mid 80's. Mr Dolby fans will be delighted to hear that he has new material out after 20 years in Kate Bush like hiding.

    Fused Magazine

I have a little interview in Fused Magazine, if you'd like to digest it swiftly online then you can do so

This 'Hey' image is for the Fused 2007 Calender. On reflection it should have said 'where do the flipping days go' in that speech bubblefest, never mind.

    Charles Bukowski

Here we have a portrait of the late great author and poet Charles Bukowski, i'm a big fan of his work so it was a pleasure to draw him for Tobys' t-shirt company 'Surburban Bliss'.

    Fred Neil

This is a portrait of the legendary folk singer Fred Neil.

    The Illustrated Ape Magazine

Marcus Oakley kindly invited me to illustrate the Celeb Death Flash-Reincarnation Special section, for the 1976 inspired issue of The Illustrated Ape Magazine, which he Art Directed alongside the very talented Marcus Walters from New Future Graphic. I also painted an Ape for the collaborative front cover, all the contributors in this issue were asked to do one. Mines the one with the orange face, back row, third from the left.

    Plan B Magazine

Here we have an illustration for a re-issues compilation review in this months issue of Plan B magazine.
